An article in a Russian newspaper has said that the writer was left with the impression that Greenock was "The crime capital of Scotland" after reading about the amount of crime in a local paper. In an opinion piece in Russia's English language daily paper the Moscow Times, writer Alexei Pankin said he was left with this view after reading the crime coverage when he visited the town as a passenger of a cruise liner that docked there on Saturday July 31. .Mr Pankin reported how he had read in a local paper reports of credit card fraud and knife crime, and how almost every page featured a story about crime committed the previous day. He said that had he read the paper before he came into the town he would not have disembarked from the vessel. He wrote: "I shuddered, thinking about all the crimes occurring in this town on a daily basis.".While he was only in the town for a period of 40 minutes, and spoke to a taxi driver and a locals in a Greenock pub, he was left with the conclusion after reading the local paper that "Greenock is the criminal capital of Scotland, and perhaps, of all the British Isles, including Ireland." .Picture: Universal News And Sport (Europe) 3 August 2010All pictures must be credited to www.universalnewsandsport.com.
